Mission to Arizona, 1916-1940: Father Augustine Schwarz, O.F.M.
Mission to Papaguería: Pedra's Home, Lehi
The Franciscan fathers regularly traveled to small villages to offer mass, whether or not there was a church. In this case, Father Augustine said his first mass in Pedra’s home in Lehi at a spot north of the Salt River.
Pedra stands in front of her house, which Fr. Augustine said was constructed of “mud spread over branches.” (The branches probably were ocotillo or saguaro ribs with a filling of adobe covered by a roof of thatch.)
