In an effort to eliminate drive-through traffic and to humanize the campus, sections of College Avenue (south of Orange) and Orange Avenue (between the Memorial Union and Forest Avenue) were converted to malls in 1968. Cady Mall, originally University Mall, was named for Gilbert L. Cady in the early 1970s.
