Architecture & Environmental Design Library

Tour

Housed in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the Architecture and Environmental Design (AED) Library has a spacious and welcoming interior, with cherrywood furnishings and a collection of over 30,000 volumes. Materials include books, videos, periodicals and archival items on architecture, interior design, industrial design, graphic design, landscape architecture, and planning.

Students in all disciplines will also need to use the other ASU libraries. Interlibrary Loan is available through Hayden Library, which is also a depository for federal, state and local documents. Many books and periodicals needed by Planning students are at Hayden Library. Noble Science and Engineering Library has an extensive map collection as well as many of the materials for industrial design and environmental planning.

Online Catalog and Periodical Indexes

To identify books, journal titles, etc. owned by the ASU Libraries, search the ASU Libraries' Online Catalog. The AED Library has six online workstations, three near the Circulation Desk and three near the index tables.

Need a book?
Try searching the ASU Libraries' Online Catalog.

Periodical indexes The ASU Libraries own thousands of periodicals, journals, magazines, newspapers and annuals. Indexes assist the researcher in locating articles in a multitude of periodical and journal sources covering most subject areas. Ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance in choosing the indexes most appropriate for your topic. Print indexes on the Index Table are arranged by broad subject areas in Architecture and Environmental Design. Access to online indexes is available through "Indexes" on the ASU Libraries' workstations.

Current Periodicals

The AED Library subscribes to approximately 150 periodicals. Most are shelved by title in the Current Periodicals Room until they are bound. Shelves flip up for storage of earlier issues. Most of the periodicals are sent to be bound in the summer. In the AED Library bound periodicals are also shelved in alphabetical order by title beginning near the copy machines on the west side of the library with titles A-K. The rest of the bound periodicals, titles L-Z are east of the Current Periodicals Room.

Architecture Stacks

Following the bound periodicals is a row of folio sized books too large to shelve in the regular stacks. Following the Folios is the AED Library book collection with call numbers A-Z. About half of the books in this library are NA call numbers, which is the designation Library of Congress gives to architecture books. Among our diverse holdings are concentrations in HD and HT (planning), NK (interior design and furniture), SB (garden design) and T (construction, technology and industrial design). In the center of the stacks on lower shelving is the FolioX area where we shelve items which must be stored flat.

If you do not find an item, please ask at the circulation desk. Please do not reshelve items yourself. Placing books on the "return" shelves at the ends of the rows where they belong helps us to reshelve more quickly.

Materials Resource Center

At the east end of the library is the Materials Resource Center an assemblage of manufacturers' catalogs, samples and other information. This is a teaching facility as well as a hands-on specifications laboratory focusing on products and building materials, especially those that are environmentally sensitive.

Reference

Located at the west side of the library, reference books are intended primarily for consultation rather than extensive reading. These may be used in the library and may not be checked out. The reference collection includes: directories, legal codes, architectural dictionaries and encyclopedias (NA31), biographical and bibliographial sources (e.g. Contemporary Archtitects), histories, atlases, general encyclopedias (Britannica, Encyclopedia of World Art) various Time-Saver Standards , interior design sources, construction sources, and cost estimating sources. Webster's Third New International Dictionary (unabridged) is on a stand near the index tables. A number of reference sources are available through the internet; see the Reference Source Links section of AED Library's Internet Resources page. Sweets Product Catalogs and the Thomas Register are in the Materials Resource Center.

Copiers

Photocopy Machines

Also along the west wall are copy machines, a bill changer and a copy card dispenser. Copies are a bit less expensive with a card. To add value to a copy card insert it into the card reader on a copy machine and add money. We recommend that you do not put a lot of money on your card and that you write your name and phone number on the back. We also provide a cutting board, stapler and three hole punch.

Group Study Room

The group study room is available without reservations. A person may use it alone, but must leave, if it is needed by a group. Pens and erasers for the whiteboard may be obtained at the circulation desk in exchange for an ID card. No food or drink is permitted.

New Books

The AED collection is constantly growing. We receive new books daily and display them on our new books shelf. These items can be checked out. Also see our New Books Lists online.

Special Collections and Archives

In the Special Collections and Archives area, the AED Library provides rare and unusual materials, with some books dating back to the eighteenth century. Notable are the extensive collections of books and ephemera on Paolo Soleri and Frank Lloyd Wright. This area also contains the Solar Energy Collection and Archival Drawings Collection. Materials do not circulate and must be used within the Special Collections Reading Room.

Other Facilities

Restrooms, a drinking fountain, public telephone and campus phone are located just outside of the library near the south entrance to the building.
