The Periodicals, Videos and Microforms Unit (PVM) of Access Services is located on the lower level of the Hayden Library. It provides access to the materials that are held in three main areas: current & bound periodicals, microforms and circulating videos. Access to PVM is available any time the Hayden Library is open.
Current Periodicals and Newspapers
In this area you will find current domestic and foreign newspapers (usually the last three months) and the most recently received issues (usually the last 1-3 years) of periodicals (magazines, journals, etc). Hayden Library holds over 4,000 current journal, magazine and newspaper subscriptions. Periodicals are located by call number, and newspapers are located alphabetically by title.
Current periodicals may not leave the reading area, but study tables and carrels are available, as is access to photocopiers.
Bound Journals
Once a periodical is no longer considered "current" it is bound in book form and shelved in the main area on this floor, across from the current periodicals area. Bound journals are also located by call number.
Many materials that would be too costly to acquire and store in print are available on microfilm (reels), microfiche (sheets), and microcards. The Hayden Microforms area holds such items as the ERIC Document (ED) collection, monograph microforms, foreign and domestic college catalogs back to 1989, archived newspapers, and any periodicals listed in the catalog with Microforms holdings (look for "FILM" or "FICHE" as part of the item's call number). Only monographic microforms may be checked out at the PVM desk; all other items may not leave the area, but readers and printers are available for viewing these items.
Hayden Library houses a large collection of popular, documentary and instructional videotapes and DVDs. These are located adjacent to the current periodicals area. Most are available for a 7 day loan with a current ASU ID with a limit of ten at one time. Course Reserve videos are located at the Circulation/Reserve desk on the Concourse Level of Hayden Library. Community Card borrowers are able to check out most of the circulating videos.
PVM also has stations equipped with monitors, VCRs and DVD players, as well as one laser disc player. These stations are provided to support the academic needs of ASU faculty, staff and students, in particular for Course Reserve in-house viewing. Use of the viewing stations, and in-house viewing of videos, is therefore limited to ASU affiliates only. Videos are available to be checked out at circulation for personal viewing to any patron with checkout privileges. All videos must be checked out in order to be viewed in-house and headphones are required. You may bring your own headphones or check out a set from Circulation. For your convenience, there are self-service stations for dubbing VHS to VHS and for PAL to VHS/VHS to PAL. There is no dubbing equipment available in the library for DVDs.
