University Libraries'
Community Card Loan Policy

The ASU Libraries are open to all users.  An individual not affiliated with ASU, through current enrollment or employment, who is an Arizona resident and meets certain age requirements (proof of residency and age required), may borrow library items by purchasing a Community Card.  The card must be applied for and renewed in person. There is an annual fee of $100. Borrowing privileges are not transferable. Interlibrary loan requests require the purchase of the $500 ILL Card.  Remote access is limited to viewing the ASU Library Catalog only, no online renewal or requests. (See Important Reminders).

Circulation Information

The Community Card entitles the borrower to a 14-day loan period for most items, as well as other circulation services, but no Interlibrary Loan (except for the Interlibrary Loan Card at $500). A borrower may check out up to fifteen (15) items. You must present picture identification each time you borrow an item.

Date Due

At the time of loan, the borrower will be notified of the due date for each item. The borrower is responsible for meeting the due date. Certain items, e.g., reserve, media, special permission items are short-term loans with different late fees. A courtesy overdue reminder will be sent. Failure to receive an overdue reminder, for whatever reason, does not remove the responsibility of the borrower for meeting each due date.

Overdues

For each regular item not returned or renewed within thirty  (30) days of the due date, the borrower is assessed a $10 overdue billing fee and a replacement charge. Only the replacement charge is cancelled when the item is returned. Once the fee has been paid, the item may be renewed.
A borrower with outstanding charges is denied borrowing privileges. An appeals process is available. and must be made within one year. Information may be obtained by contacting the appropriate Billing office. Contested library charges are only reviewed internally.

Renewals

Community card borrowers may make up two (2) renewals for each item.  Renewable Law Library items may be renewed two (2) times.  Items recalled by another borrower cannot be renewed.  Renewals may be done at any ASU Library by bringing the items to the Circulation Desk.  Renewals may also be processed over the phone at (480) 965-2595. Phone renewal will not inform you of your new due date(s). Call (480) 965-3605 after 48 hours to confirm renewal. A renewal request may also be submitted via the online renewal form at http://www.asu.edu/lib/access/blocked/. Certain items, e.g., reserve, media, microform are not renewable.

Returning Library Materials

Materials may be returned to any ASU Libraries location, regardless of which library they were checked out from. Each library has an interior book return located near the circulation/check out desk, and there are also several exterior book returns that are available 24/7. Please use the exterior book returns for print items only in order to prevent severe heat damage to multimedia materials (DVD, VHS, etc. Exterior book return locations:

Recalls

Items that are checked out may be requested by other borrowers at any time.  All items are subject to recall.  Due to the strict enforcement of the recall process, failure to receive a recall notice does not absolve borrower from knowing an item is recalled.  It is important for all borrowers to regularly review the status of their library account, checking for recalls by contacting circulation. Borrowers should select the best method (print or email) for receiving notices, appropriately manage their email accounts and SPAM software, and/or keep mailing addresses valid. If there are other requests at the time of checkout, no notice is generated and the borrower is given an automatic 14-day, "no renewal, no fine free period" checkout.  This recall policy applies all year long: breaks, sabbaticals, vacations, etc.  Recall of an item may shorten the original loan period.  Items not returned by midnight on the recall due date are billed the replacement cost and a $10.00 fee per item.  Recall late fees are strictly enforced and only the replacement cost is cancelled when the item is returned.  If the library is closed, use the 24-hour bookdrop.

Abuse of Library Privileges

The library will suspend library privileges and block the account of Community Card borrowers who fail to adhere to library policies or who owe money. Failure to return library materials and pay overdue fees may result in further collection procedures, including the possibility of action by a Collection Agency.

Important Reminders

  • No proxies.
  • You must report a lost ID to the library.
