Meeting Notes for September 11, 2003

    Announcements
Pat made an announcement regarding the upcoming Windows 2003 training being provided by Interface Technical Training. The class is currently full for the Windows 2000 - Windows 2003 class. A waiting list is being established. It is possible that a second class will be held sometime after the first of the year. Also, we did not get the minimum number of people interested in the Windows NT - Windows 2003 class, so this one has been cancelled.

Presentation - Dr. William Lewis, CIO
Dr. Lewis spoke briefly about the recent reorganization within IT. The Data Comm group headed by Dave Mckee reports to John Babb. Telephone Services, headed by Rose Snow, now reports to Bob Nelson, Craig Trimble (*new construction activity) and Joe Askins (security and business continuity) report directly to Bill Lewis.

Dr. Lewis also indicated that there has been a revamping of the University-wide committees. ITAC will be no longer. The three main committees that will continue to function relative to computing issues are as follows:

    - IRCAC - Instructional and Research Computing Advisory Committee

    • This group consists primarily of faculty and reports directly to the Provost (Dr. Glick).

    - ASPAC - Administrative Systems Project Advisory Committee
    • Reports directly to the Provost (Dr. Glick)

    - CIOAC - CIO Advisory Committee
    • This group consists primary of lead technical people for each college/vp area
    • Reports directly to the CIO (Dr. Lewis)
    • Responsible for reviewing projects that need to be reviewed by ABOR
    • Provides a structure for review and support

Bill talked about the four levels of projects that are reviewed by ABOR. They are as follows:

    - < $100,000

    • hardware, software, maintenance people
    • usually internal projects
    • these don't need to be reported

    - > $100,000 < $250,000
    • reviewed on campus by the CIOAC
    • reported to ABOR

    - > $250,000 < $500,000
    • CIOAC reviews them then submits to the tri-university council for review

    - > $500,000
    • CIOAC reviews them then submits to ABOR for review and approval

Classroom support was also discussed. Currently a staff of student workers performs daily checks of all classrooms to make sure they are appropriately supplied with markers, etc. This year eight (8) new mediated lecterns were put into classrooms at a cost of $50,000 each.

The Lattie F. Coor hall will contain 25 mediated classrooms ranging form 20 to 299 in capacity. There will also be an auditorium. All classrooms will be on the lower level and first floor.

A proposed communications infrastructure upgrade has been submitted to ABOR for approval. This would include new duct banks, where needed, riser upgrades in the buildings, core network upgrades (to add redundancy), new routers and switches. Bonding will be used to fund it. It is expected to cost around $22 million and will be a three year project to complete.

Next meeting - Thursday, October 2, 2003 9:30 Computing Commons Auditorium
