Meeting Notes for October 7, 2004

    Announcements
    - Karra Lawrence, WNUG Chair, indicated Scott Worthington from W. P. Carey School of Business will be the Co-Chair, and Sharon Bushart from CLAS will be the Note Taker for this coming year.

    - Any topics or suggestions for meetings should be forwarded to Karra Lawrence or any member of the steering committee.

    Feature Presentation
    Presentation material will be provided and placed on the WNUG website.

    Windows XP SP2 presented by David Lee, Scott Worthington, Sean Garrett, and Pedro Carrasquilla.

    • College of Business
      Faculty/Staff in active directory (AD). Student laptops are not joined to the domain.
      Firewall with pop-up blocker enabled.
      Tested SP2 with firewall enabled. No real issues
    • West Campus
      Used AD Group Policy to block delivery through Windows Update (WU) and Automatic Update (AU). By the end of the month they will be pushing SP2 using SMS 2003 and enable WU and AU through GP.
      Using border firewall. No Kerio or XP firewall installed/enabled
      Tested SP2 with firewall enabled. No real issues
    • East Campus
      AD domain. Using SUS for updates. SP2 update 'picked' up from SUS server and takes approximate 15-30 minutes to install. Reboot required.
    • Summary
      Microsoft suggests cleaning out spyware before implementing SP2
      GPO settings to disable WU and AU are available in presentation material
      OpenAFS v1.3.70 or later works with SP2. OpenAFS v1.3.71 is the latest release but currently not on ASU site. Go to http://www.openafs.org/

    Active Directory: Moving from an NT Domain into an OU by Tom Merriam.

    Four Phases
    1) Pre-implementation planning and testing
      a. Review/document shares, groups, accounts, shared databases Be aware that Access requires the same drive mapping
      b. Complete Service Level Agreement
      c. Request OUs in TASURITE & set up trust between NT domain and asurite
      d. Join test computer(s) (use latest version of Netdom tool)
      e. Establish security groups
      f. Test

    2) Production environment
      a. Request OUs in production environment
      b. Join computers
      c. Security group creation
      d. Establish Printers

    3) Migrate profiles
    4) Post Production
      a. Break trust
      b. Delete empty SIDs
