Meeting Notes for February 12, 2004

    Presentation by Tyler Farmer
    Security
Tyler mentioned several dates when support for various products will end. Some of those include:

    • Windows NT 4.0 server - December 2004

    • Windows 98 - December 2003, paid support December 2006

    • Java VM - October 2004 (even security updates will no longer be available)

      • New computers should be coming with the Sun version of Java installed
      • If you have the Microsoft Java applet installed or have developed applications that use it, you should probably consider changing to the Sun version

IIS 6.0 only installs static file services instead of all the other ones that by default are installed in Windows 2000.

Windows XP SP2 is a MAJOR service pack release.
    • Many things will be disabled that are currently enabled
    • More robust firewall with granular control
    • Pop-up blocker will be installed
    • Beta release - December 2003
    • Release date - sometime 1st half of calendar year 2004

    Windows Server 2003 SP1
    • Release date - sometime 2nd half of calendar year 2004

Outlined the points presented by Steve Ballmer in a presentation on security.
