 Arizona State University • Tempe, AZ 85287-2601 • PH: 480/965-4188 • FAX: 480/965-0310

When, where?
June 3 - July 26, 2002 at Arizona State University, Main Campus, Tempe, Arizona.

Background Information
The Russian and East European Studies Consortium at Arizona State University, through the Critical Languages Institute, offers intensive summer language instruction in underrepresented languages. Instruction will be offered in Macedonian, Serbian-Croatian, and Tatar at the elementary and intermediate levels. Armenian (Eastern) will be offered at the elementary level this summer for the first time. With support from ASU Summer Sessions, the ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and funding from the Social Science Research Council and the American Council of Learned Societies, tuition and fees are waived to enable more students to study these less commonly taught languages.

Eligibility
CLI is open to all ASU and non-ASU undergraduate and graduate students and non-degree students. Advanced high school students may be eligible. Applicants for second-year courses must have completed the equivalent of first-year coursework in the same language. The instruction is very intensive - you will complete the equivalent of a full year of academic work in eight weeks. We strongly suggest that you view this program as a full-time commitment.

Application Procedure
The application process consists of four steps:

1) If you were registered at ASU during the spring 2002 semester skip to step 2. If you did not take classes at ASU during the spring 2002 semester go to the Summer Sessions web site. You may complete the application online or in person.

2) Verify that your MMR immunizations have been approved by Student Health. For new ASU students: you need to include an ASU ID number with your MMR documentation. Once you submit your application online you will receive an ID within a week. You can access the MMR form through Summer Sessions or directly from Student Health. Please confirm that you have been cleared for registration by Student Health . You cannot be enrolled in any classes until this is done. You can verify the posting on the ASU Interactive web site once your ASU ID number is assigned or you can contact Student Health by phone (480-965-3346).

3) Complete the CLI Registration form.

4) If you are registering for a practicum, make your deposit check for $300 payable to ASU.

Fellowships for students enrolling in intensive Tatar
A limited number of fellowships will be available to offset some of the living expenses and transportation costs for students enrolled for credit in Tatar. Students wishing to apply for fellowship support should submit a 250-word Statement of Purpose. The statement should identify your reasons for taking the course, including an indication of how the study of Tatar will contribute to your academic and professional goals. The Statement of Purpose, along with a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, is due with your registration no later than April 30th. Faculty letters of reference should be mailed directly to the Consortium.

Practicum in Macedonia (Ohrid), Yugoslavia (Novi Sad), or Armenia (Yerevan)
Students may register for an optional two-credit, three-week practicum in Ohrid (Macedonian language students), Novi Sad (Serbian-Croatian language students), or Yerevan (Armenian language students). The practicum, July 29-August 16 (August 5-23 for Novi Sad), immediately follows CLI. Estimated costs are $1,400-1,700 for program fees, housing, meals, excursions, and local round-trip transport, plus airfare. Request a brochure for additional information. ASU Summer Sessions has a deadline of February 5, 2002. Applications received after that date will be considered on a space available basis.

Deadlines
The application deadline for CLI summer language classes and Tatar fellowship applications is April 30, 2002. If you wish to register for an overseas practicum, applications should be submitted, with a $300 non-refundable deposit, by February 5, 2002. Applications received after announced deadlines will be considered on a space available basis.

Financial Aid
Financial aid may be used for CLI and the overseas practicum. Students should apply through their own universities. We particularly encourage graduate applicants to apply for FLAS and/or NSEP fellowship support.

ASU Housing
On- and off-campus housing options are available. ASU has air-conditioned residence halls and dining options. See the Residential Life web site at or call 480-965-1531 for additional information or an application. Off-campus housing information can be obtained from a number of sources including the ASU Memorial Union board or the Arizona Republic, the state's largest daily newspaper.

Student Resources
Students enrolled in CLI courses will have student priviledges at the ASU libraries, computing commons, and student recreation center. (Access may take 2-3 days after CLI classes begin).
