Dr. Michael M. Crow, President of Arizona State University
Prior to joining ASU, Crow was Executive Vice Provost of Columbia University, where he also was Professor of Science and Technology Policy in the School of International and Public Affairs. As Executive Vice Provost, Crow oversaw Columbia's research enterprise, technology and innovation transfer operations, strategic initiative program, interdisciplinary program development, and an assortment of special projects. He played the lead role in the creation of the Columbia Earth Institute (CEI), a leader in earth systems teaching and research. CEI is a federation of eight research and teaching centers: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia, Biosphere 2 Center, Center for Environmental Research and Conservation, Earth Engineering Center, International Research Institute for Climate Prediction, Center for International Earth Science Information Network, and Laboratory of Populations. He also helped found Columbia's Center for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO) in Washington, D.C., an intellectual center dedicated to linking science and technology to desired social, economic, environmental and other outcomes. Crow holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies from Iowa State University (1977) and a doctorate degree in Public Administration (Science and Technology Policy) from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University (1985). Prior to moving to Columbia in 1991, he was Institute Professor of Technology Management and Director of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology at Iowa State University. At Columbia he served as Vice Provost, Vice Provost for Research, and Associate Vice Provost for Science and Engineering before becoming Executive Vice Provost in 1998. He is the author of many articles and the author or editor of several books relating to the analysis of research organizations, technology transfer, strategic R&D management, research universities, science and technology policy, and the practice and theory of public policy.
