Let's Keep Our Campus from Becoming an Ashtray
It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide every year. That is billions of cigarettes flicked, one at a time, on our sidewalks, our beaches, our nature trails, our gardens, and other public places every single day.
In fact, cigarettes are the most littered item in America and the world and at ASU.
Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, NOT COTTON, and they can take decades to degrade. Not only does cigarette litter ruin even the most picturesque setting, but the toxic residue in cigarette filters is damaging to the environment.

State University’s 750-acre Tempe campus was designated
as an Arboretum in 1990. It is a lush, pan-tropical oasis, filled
with palms, fruit trees, conifers, desert trees, cacti, succulents
and other plants.
In 1991, art critic Thomas Gaines selected ASU as one of the
50 most beautiful campuses in the United States, listing it in
his book, The Campus as a Work of Art.
