LINAU: New Supervisor Development Program

Design Elements

  • This program has key messages regarding the university's vision and values embedded
in the curriculum. University core expectations (competencies) common to all ASU supervisors, managers, directors, executives and other leaders will be defined and emphasized.

  • Each participant will receive a 360° assessment before the program. This assessment
will explore the participants' performance in the core expectation (competency) areas.

  • Participants will do realistic exercises at key points throughout the series to gain
specific knowledge to transfer directly back to the workplace.

  • OHR subject matter experts will present the curriculum in partnership with "field" HR Directors
and other representatives from the Office of General Counsel, Financial Services,
the College of Public Programs and Environmental Health & Safety.

Sample Syllabus

SESSION 1: Welcome and Building Your Team
The first day will begin with a discussion of the New American University and senior administration's vision, values and expectations of leaders. Mid-morning will be devoted to a debriefing of the 360° assessment results. The afternoon will cover topics related to compensation and salary management as well as recruiting and behavior-based interviews. Information regarding how to build a team through sourcing, recruiting, retaining and developing employees who have those critical skills will be highlighted on this day.

SESSION 2: Rules of Engagement
The second session is compliance day. Representatives from Environmental Health & Safety will present information relative to safety at the university, the Office of General Counsel will talk about major employment-related legislation, and there will be a segment on ABOR internal controls, among other topics.

SESSION 3: Maintaining a Positive Culture
The third day will begin with a self-assessment on type temperament. Participants will learn about the Employee Assistance Office, how to have those crucial conversations with your team, and recognition and rewards.

SESSION 4: Managing Team Performance
The fourth day targets planning and goal setting. The process of aligning performance standards with the New American University will be discussed and elements of the Performance Management Program will be highlighted through the day. Providing coaching and feedback will also be addressed.

SESSION 5: Leading for Maximum Impact
The fifth and final day is focused specifically on building leadership skills. The session opens with a discussion on understanding the responsibilities of leadership and moves into executive presence and networking. Finally, the week closes with each attendee creating a personal leadership contract with themselves, that will outline what action items they have established to effectively apply this training to their development as a leader in the New American University.
