The Resume

Every resume should answer two questions.

  1. What can you do for me?
  2. Why should you be considered for this job?

There are three types of resumes commonly used.

Chronological - Focus on time and job continuity. Because it is arranged by time, it is the easiest to format and write. Easy to read. Almost anyone can use this format. The weakness is any gaps in your work experience is immediately noticeable.(ASU prefers)

Functional - Focus on functions, skills and responsibilities. Organized by functional titles. Can tailor skills and abilities to a particular job. Can overcome problems with little or no formal work experience. The weakness is this format leads many employers to believe you're hiding something.(Least preferred by ASU)

Combination - Combines elements of chronological and functional styles. The bulk of the resume is functional, with skills and function listed rather than the job title. Work history with job titles and company names are listed. Can tailor skills and abilities to a particular job. The weakness of this format is specific positions and titles are downplayed and job duties are not spelled out.
