The Sun Devil Award for Service recognizes the contributions of employees who are retiring with five or more years of continuous ASU service by providing retirement certificates. You can request certificates at any time during the year—but requests should be made 2-6 weeks before a retirement date.

Departments are encouraged to present awards of service to employees in a meaningful way at the department's recognition celebration.

RECOGNITION PRESENTATION TIPS

How a recognition award is presented can be more important and meaningful than the award itself. The retirement certificate is a token of appreciation recognizing an employee’s years of dedicated service. The goal is to make the recipient feel valued and connected to ASU.

Prior to the Presentation

  • Plan the celebration.
  • Decide when and where to hold the event.
  • Obtain the retirement certificate.
  • Plan for refreshments.
  • Invite others to attend.
  • Ask the employee’s supervisor for positive input.
  • Consider the personality and preferences of the employee being recognized.
For example, does the employee prefer to public recognition with lots of people or a quieter celebration with their team?

Prepare a thoughtful presentation that contains key information about the employee being honored, including:

  • Recipient’s Name (know the correct pronunciation)
  • Employee’s anniversary date and number of years of service
  • Current job title and responsibilities
  • Acknowledge the employee’s dedication to ASU
  • Recognize the employee's contributions and accomplishments

During the Presentation
Make the presentation a meaningful celebration that honors retirees for their commitment to ASU.  Highlight their individual contributions and show how their accomplishments supported department and University goals.  Involve peers in the celebration to build a spirit of community.  Make the award recipient feel valued!
