President's Award for Innovation

Eligibility
The President’s Award for Innovation recognizes ASU individual employees or teams for innovations that improve educational, administrative, or other organizational processes through creative approaches. ASU values creative and innovative thinking. To be considered for this award, the innovation must have been implemented and then demonstrated sustained positive results for at least one year.

Employees may be classified or administrative staff, academic or service professionals, or faculty. A team may be comprised of any group of ASU employees including members outside the university partnering in the innovation.

Selection Process
This is a single level award for which there may be multiple recipients. Recipients of the President’s Award for Innovation will be determined by a review group appointed by the President.

Award Criteria

  • Originality (40%) - the creativity and uniqueness of the innovation compared to traditional methods.
  • Portability (20%) - the extent to which the innovation lends itself to widespread application.
  • Results and Benefits (40%) - specific details, data, and observations derived from the innovation, including benefits, which reflect the degree of enrichment.

Supporting Materials
The following will be considered a complete application packet. Failure to submit this application and a complete packet will lead to disqualification.

  1. A complete application, including a contact person, the roster (page 3), and the Innovation Overview (page 4).
  2. A short abstract (180 words or less) summarizing the innovation on a separate page. This abstract will be used for promotional purposes and will not be counted toward the 5-page limitation.
  3. Innovation documentation limited to:
    - five (5) pages or less (excess pages will not be read)
    - single spaced
    - font size 10 or larger in Arial or Times New Roman
    - graphs and charts are accepted as part of the page limitation.

Within the 5-page application, the description of the innovation, should include:

  • justification of the creativity and uniqueness of the innovation compared to traditional methods at ASU or at other institutions.
  • an assessment or a description of efforts to date to encourage dissemination and/or deployment of the innovation to other parts of ASU or to other organizations.
  • the measurements and monitoring used to establish the degree to which the results indicate a significant benefit in cost, customer service, work environment improvement, and achievement of organization goals. Positive results must be ongoing and sustained for at least one year at the time the application is submitted.

Writer's Briefing
A Writer's Briefing will be held for those interested in submitting an application. Tips on effectively organizing and writing applications will be provided. To register, contact Linda Uhley at least three days prior to the session at 480.965.5089 or linda.uhley@asu.edu.

January 17, 2008 - Application due
March 26, 2008 - Award recipients notified
April 2008 - President's Recognition Reception

Submission of the Application
Prepare twelve (12) collated copies of the application including all forms, supporting documentation, and the abstract before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2008. Deliver all twelve copies of the submission to:

President's Recognition Reception
Recipients of this year's President's Award for Innovation, President's Medal for Social Embeddedness, and Top Multiple SUN Award designation will be honored at a private award ceremony and dessert reception hosted by the President's Office.
