Where do responsibilities fall when an employee requests Vacation Leave?
Both the employee and the supervisor are responsible for ensuring that the business needs of the department are met when considering the request. Consider the operational needs of the department, take into account whether it is a particularly busy time of year.
Giving as much advance notice as possible for Vacation Leave allows for the opportunity to plan ahead in order to support business needs.
Can an employee use Vacation Leave for tardiness?
Generally, no. If it is an occasional lateness or an emergency, an allowance may be made. However, it is not good department practice as a rule. If a pattern of tardiness develops, it should be addressed as a performance issue and not condoned by allowing leave to be taken.
What if the employee does not have enough
accrued vacation time when requesting the leave?
The balance of accrued Vacation Leave should always be enough to fulfill the request for vacation. In circumstances where accrued leave may fall short of the request, leave without pay may, in some circumstances, be requested to offset the balance.
Where does the responsibility fall for reporting any changes
to the vacation leave?
If there are any changes in the duration of the leave, reasonable notification by the employee must be given to the supervisor for reporting purposes and to allow for adequate coverage.

May an employee use Vacation Leave in conjunction with Family Leave?
Upon the employee's request, accrued vacation hours may be used in conjunction with Family Leave per SPP 705-02.
What is the maximum balance of accrued Vacation Leave that an employee may carry per year?
Refer to the accrual schedules in SPP 702-01 Vacation Leave.
Can an employee donate their Vacation Leave to another employee who needs sick time?
Refer to SPP 702-04 Compassionate Transfer of Leave. It is important to note that those who contribute to the fund must retain a minimum balance of 80 vacation hours after the leave transfer.
How is accrued Vacation Leave paid out upon termination?
