FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who has to complete a probationary period?
Any classified employee who is benefits eligible and hired at 50% or more FTE, including:

  • A classified employee who transfers from the University of Arizona
    or Northern Arizona University; and
  • An employee who changes employment categories to a classified position.

How long is the probationary period?
It is usually six months from the date of hire, but the ASU Department of Public Safety requires different probationary periods. Please refer to "Exception" in the SPP 303 Probationary Period policy for more info.

What happens when a probationary employee accepts a new position before completing the initial probationary period?
The probationary period begins anew, and the time spent in a previous position does not count toward the six-month probationary period for the new position.

How often does a regular, classified employee have to complete a probationary period?
Once the initial six-month probation period is completed, an employee does not have to serve another probationary period upon accepting a new position.
The exception is ASU DPS positions.

Does time spent in a leave without pay status or as a temporary employee count toward the probationary period?
No, the employee is requried to complete a full six months in the position hired.

When are performance evaluations to be given to probationary employees?
The end of the third and fifth months of employment.

When can a probationary employee be released?
An employee may be released at any time (Refer to SPP 1011 Involuntary Termination for further details).
The exception is ASU DPS positions.

Is the release of an employee after the probationary period the same?
No, after the probationary period, an employee may be terminated only in accordance with university discipline policies (see SPP 809 Discipline).

If I'm released during probation, do I receive pay for my unused vacation hours?
Refer to SPP 1007 Processing Terminations of Employment for more info. Probationary classified staff that terminate during the probationary period will be compensated for accrued vacation as part of their notice period.

Is the termination of a probationary classified employee a grievable claim?
No, please refer to SPP 901 Grievance Process for further details.
