Develop a script to ensure consistency.

  • Be up front with salary or salary range (this may further eliminate applicants).

  • When first calling, state that your call is in reference to XYZ position and the salary range is XYZ. Then ask the candidate if he or she is still interested. If yes, then either conduct or schedule a phone interview. Explain that the purpose of the phone interview is to narrow down the search and that the next step would be in-person interviews.

  • Ensure that the questions for the "in-person" interview are different and more in-depth than the "phone" interview questions.

  • For the "phone" interview, think basic, "need to know" questions; use desired qualifications to assist with developing interview questions.

  • Establish what type of response, skill or attributes you are seeking from each candidate to assist in determining what candidates will make it to the "in-person" interview.

  • Keep the phone interview to about 20-30 minutes. This amount of time should be enough to determine whether to bring the applicant in for an "in-person" interview.
