The Grievance Process (SPP 901) allows non-probationary classified, service professionals and administrative employees to file grievance complaints and have them acknowledged promptly and efficiently. All actions at any stage of the grievance process shall be characterized by fairness, frankness, courtesy and respect for the dignity of each individual involved. Whenever possible, departments should attempt to resolve complaints internally at the level closest to the employee who has a concern.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How are complaints handled?
There are several options:

  • Mediation
Mediation can be requested by the employee and requires informal assistance from an HR Consultant or a member of the ASU Ombudsperson Committee to resolve a complaint.
  • Informal Grievance
Requested by the employee to discuss the complaint with his or her supervisor, and then through each succeeding supervisor up through the responsible dean or director for a resolution. If the complaint is not resolved, and it is grievable, the employee may then pursue the resolution process through a formal grievance.
  • Formal Grievance
The employee files a written grievance to resolve a complaint, which is addressed by an external agency designated by the university to complete the hearing process.

What are some examples of non-grievable actions?

  • Discrimination complaints
  • Performance evaluations
  • Job classification and compensation changes
  • Termination of probationary classified staff
  • Actions grieved after resignation or voluntary termination
  • Hiring decisions
  • Layoff through reduction in force
