A department confronting budget constraints, funding reductions and/or a reorganization due to program or functional changes, modifications, elimination or redirection may determine that a Reduction in Force (RIF) is necessary.

Your HR Consultant or ASU West's Human Resources Department can assist you with the process by advising and providing general assistance to the department and the employees involved.

BENEFITS. You are eligible to continue medical and dental insurance coverage under COBRA. Life insurance conversion options are also available. An information and enrollment packet will be mailed to you at the current home address on record.

Please note that you will have sixty (60) days from the date of notification to elect or decline continuation of benefits coverage. Should you return to active employment in a benefits-eligible position, you will have thirty (30) days to re-enroll for benefits coverage, which will become effective the first day of the Pay Period following your actual enrollment date.

REDUCED IN-STATE TUITION. Laid-off employees and those who received buyout pay—including their spouses and dependents—can continue to receive tuition assistance for any semester or summer session when registration for classes has occurred at least one day before the layoff effective date or when classes start during the employee's layoff notice period.

SUNCARD PRIVILEGES. You many continue to receive privileges associated with use of the employee SunCard.

What is reemployment and what are my rights?
Reemployment is where employees who have been given a layoff notice are given priority consideration for vacant positions that become available after their notice date. Affected employees are eligible if their most recent performance rating was a 3 or better (2 or better on the old 3-point scale) and who have not taken the buyout pay option.

Once an employee has been given a layoff notice, the employee has 15 days to contact their HR Consultant to set up a reemployment meeting. During the meeting, comparable job titles that the laid-off employee meets the minimum qualifications for and campus locations the employee would prefer to work at are discussed. Once this list has been finalized, this information along with the employee’s resume, is forwarded to Recruitment & Selection and the employee is placed on the reemployment list. From that point forward, the affected employee would be considered for any positions that become available with the job titles they have selected.

The affected employee will be eligible to remain on the reemployment list through their notice period plus an additional six months beyond their layoff effective date (termination date) provided that they do not decline a combination of two interviews or job offers at which point they would be removed from the reemployment list. In addition, once an affected employee obtains another position at the University, they will be removed from the reemployment list.

Please see SPP 213: Reduction in Force for more details on reemployment.

Can I apply for other ASU positions while on layoff status?
You are eligible to apply for positions at the university.
See Employment and Job Openings for a current listing of open positions.

If you are successful in obtaining another position within the University prior to your layoff effective date, you can be transferred to that position immediately.

If you accept a transfer to another department, you will relinquish all recall rights to the department from which you were laid off and layoff status/priority status cease.

What happens to my sick leave and vacation balance?
You are eligible to be paid for the amount of your accumulated vacation hours, not to exceed the amount earned for one year of service.

If you secure a benefits-eligible position with the University within one year of the end date of your contract, you may be credited, at the discretion of the hiring department, with unused sick hours accumulated prior to your termination.
