What is the Employee Assistance Office?
The Employee Assistance Office (EAO) offers free, short-term counseling to all benefit-eligible employees, their spouses and dependents. It offers multi-disciplinary resources to assist eligible employees in achieving an appropriate balance in all areas of life.

How can I schedule an appointment?
Employees can contact the Employee Assistance Office directly or their supervisor may refer them.

Can an employee be required to seek counseling?
In cases where an employee has violated the university drug and alcohol policy, the employee may be required to participate in a drug rehabilitation program through the Employee Assistance Office.

Can an employee attend counseling sessions during working hours—and how is the time charged?
The first appointment with both the Employee Assistance professional and psychiatrist may be made during working hours without charging any accrued leave. Subsequent visits must be charged to sick leave; if accrued sick leave is insufficient, vacation leave or leave without pay can be used.

How many visits are allowed?
The services provided by the EAO can vary. For brief counseling, one to five sessions is typically offered. However, in extenuating circumstances, the additional counseling sessions may be advised by the EAO professional.

Are my visits to the EAO confidential?
The Employee Assistance Office ensures confidentiality. However, in certain circumstances the EAO office is bound by law and ethical standards to disclose relevant information. These circumstances can include:

  • A clear threat to hurt oneself and/or others.
  • Information shared about physical and/or sexual abuse of a child or vulnerable adult (for example, a developmentally disabled adult who is unable to make an informed choice).
  • A court action involving a client could possibly require a subpoena of the client's EAO records.
