FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When may Bereavement Leave be used?
Bereavement Leave may be used for absence due to the death of a relative covered under the Bereavement Policy or a member of the employee's established household who is also the employee's relative.

What relatives are covered
under the Bereavement policy?

Relatives covered under the policy are:

  • parent (includes a natural parent, stepparent, adoptive parent or surrogate parent),
  • brother or sister
  • spouse
  • child (includes a natural child, adoptive child,
    foster child or stepchild)
  • grandparent
  • brother-, sister-, son-, daughter- or parent-in-law

For the death of a relative not covered under Bereavement Leave, the university policy (SPP 701-01 Sick Leave) says, "An employee may use up to three days of accrued sick leave for this purpose and two additional days to attend or arrange funeral services out of state."

Is the supervisor required to allow an employee to use Bereavement Leave?
Bereavement Leave is generally not questioned. However, discretion and judgment should be used in assessing a request for Bereavement Leave. If there are any concerns, the supervisor should have a conversation with the HR Consultant.

Is Bereavement Leave always paid? What if additional time is needed?
An employee must be in pay status to receive Bereavement leave. Under the policy, three days paid Bereavement Leave are granted with an additional two paid days to attend or make arrangements for an out-of-state funeral. If an employee needs additional time, vacation time may be used with the supervisor's approval.

How is the leave recorded?
The employee can record the leave on their Timesheet that is accessed through My ASU. A supervisor or DTA can record leave on behalf of the employee on the employee’s timesheet located in Manager Self Service.

For help on entering time through Manager Self Service, please review the DTA Quick Reference Guide. For help entering leave after the pay period end date has occurred, please use the Time Adjustment form or contact your Payroll Specialist.
