Password Security Tips

PROTECT YOUR PASSWORD

  • Change your password when you receive a new user ID.
  • Memorize your password.
  • Never share your password with anyone.
  • Do not keep your password in an easily accessible location.
  • Change your password regularly.
  • If you think your password has been discovered, change it immediately.

A GOOD PASSWORD IS:

  • impossible to break
  • easy to remember
  • long enough so trying random combinations of letters will not break it.
DO NOT WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORD.
Instead, choose a password that you can remember. Here are some tips to help you create a secure password you can easily remember:
  • Your password must be 6-8 characters.
  • Use a mixture of UPPER and lower case letters and include at least one number or special character. The special characters you can use are:

! % * - _ + = : , . / ?

A PASSWORD SHOULD BE EASY TO REMEMBER
BUT HARD TO GUESS.

  • Do not use your name, phone number, birthday or other easily obtained personal information.
  • Do not use your significant other's name or nickname, a pet's name or your children's names.
  • Do not use any word that can be found in a dictionary.
  • Do not use any simple geometric pattern on the keyboard such as qwerty.
  • Do not use any obvious permutation of the above such as your name spelled backwards.

TRY THESE EXERCISES
Think of a phrase or sentence that is easy to remember.
Take the first letter of each word and insert punctuation and/or a digit.

"Friday the 13th was a scary movie" = Ft13wasm
"Quick, Superman, to the phone booth" = q,S,2tpb

Choose a word and break it up with digits and punctuation
and then add capitals:
virtuosity = vir2osiT
homework = h.Work!
