Social Security/Unemployment

Social Security is a federally required retirement, disability and supplemental health insurance program intended to provide a portion of your retirement income, as well as disability and survivor's insurance during your working years.

Both employees and the university contribute equally to Social Security. Your social security contribution is in two parts:

  1. FICA/OASI with a premium of 6.20% of salary, and
  2. Medicare with a premium of 1.45% of salary.

The FICA/OASI taxable wage base ceiling for 2008 is $102,000 and for Medicare it is unlimited amount.

Unemployment Compensation

In the event of your termination of employment with the university,

a weekly benefit in lieu of wages will be paid to you through the State Unemployment Compensation Fund, if you are determined eligible.

To initiate a benefit, you will need to contact a state unemployment compensation office in your area.
