Which plans will cover an older child?
You may enroll him/her in the medical, dental and vision plans, and your older child may be covered under the Standard Dependent Life Insurance plan.

Who qualifies as an older child?
An older child is a natural child, adopted child or stepchild of the employee or domestic partner who is NOT a full-time student or is NOT disabled and who satisfies all of the following criteria:

  • Is younger than 25 years of age; and
  • Is unmarried; and
  • Was covered by a health insurance plan made available by the State during the year the individual was 18; and
  • Resides in Arizona.

Here is a recap of the all dependent children that are eligible for coverage.

  • Child** through age 18, or
  • Foster child through age 18, or
  • Child through age 18 for whom the employee or domestic partner
         has court-ordered guardianship, or
  • Child age 19-24 if a full-time student as defined by school or college, or
  • Child age 19-24 satisfying the criteria above, or
  • Child with a disability disclosed and approved within 31 days of age 19.

Yes.  If your older child is not currently covered under the benefits program, please complete
and submit the Enrollment Packet—with Older Child via the confidential Benefits e-fax at 480.993.0007 for approval.  

  • Only submit one enrollment form for your older children. 
  • Submit a Declaration for Tax Status form for each dependent. 

IMPORTANT If your application is approved, your older child coverage will be effective the first of the month following the date your application was received by the ASU Benefits Design & Management Office.

If I want to continue coverage for my 19-24 year old dependent when s/he graduates or stops going to school, do I need to notify the Benefits Design & Management Office?
Yes, if your child meets the qualifications, the status must be changed from Student to Older Child.

Will information I submit regarding an older child be kept confidential?
Yes.  To comply with federal HIPAA regulations for confidentiality, only approved employees on the Benefits Design & Management or State team will receive and have access to this documentation.
