Improved Housing Assignment Process for First-time Freshmen

First-time freshmen at ASU do not have to complete an application to secure on-campus housing. When a student is admitted to the university, he/she can conveniently go online and confirm or modify their pre-selected housing and dining preferences, or indicate that they will be residing at home in the primary residence of their parents or guardians while commuting to ASU.

In addition to living at home with parents or legal guardians, students who are married, older than 21, have dependents or familial responsibilities, or have compelling financial or medical circumstances, will not be expected to live on campus. While we know living on campus provides a very important success support network to students, we also recognize that some individual circumstances do not allow for it.

Why is living on campus a good idea?

Research shows that students who live on campus their first year experience greater academic success. They tend to transition more easily to university life, be retained at higher rates than students who live off-campus, graduate faster, be more involved in co-curricular activities and be more connected to the university community.

ASU has expected and encouraged first-time freshmen to live on campus for the past several years and is pleased that ASU housing can now accommodate all first-time freshmen.

Our goal is for each student to experience university life and academic success and persist through to graduation. For more information about University Housing, visit our About Us page or contact us at 480.965.3515.

University Housing is committed to ASU students’ academic and personal success. By providing welcoming and inclusive living and learning environments, we contribute to that success through increased accessibility to:

  • Classrooms, faculty members, advisors, mentors and peer groups
  • Supportive living communities through Residential Colleges, where you can live and learn with students in your academic major, and the First-Year Residential Experience (FYRE), which is embedded within.
  • Academic support, tutoring, study groups, leadership and success coaching and specialized social and academic activities tailored to meet the needs of each specific community.

Can I use financial aid for housing and dining?

Yes. Financial aid can be used to offset housing and dining costs. ASU encourages all students to submit a FAFSA application to determine eligibility for other sources of aid. Learn more about Financial Aid and applying for aid.
