Doctoral, Masters and JD Candidates

Students will indicate their participation at the University Commencement Ceremony when completing the Cap and Gown Order Form through the ASU Bookstore at the ASU's Tempe Campus, ASU's West campus, ASU's Downtown campus or ASU's Polytechnic campus. Most college convocations and all special interest convocation events require an RSVP for paticipation. Please contact the dean's office of your college to ask about the RSVP policy for your college convocation event. For information about special interest convocation activities, please contact the University Ceremonies Office at 480-965-3565.

Doctoral Candidates

Doctoral candidates enter the Wells Fargo Arena through the lower west ramp 30 minutes prior to the ceremony and proceed to the front of the seating area on the floor of the arena where Division of Graduate Studies staff will assist you in finding your assigned seat. All doctoral candidates and graduate advisors will wear proper academic regalia. Please carry your hood over your arm. It should not be worn before your degree is conferred. Please invite your graduate advisor to participate in the hooding ceremony. If your advisor cannot attend the ceremony, please invite an appropriate substitute from the faculty. Your graduate advisor or substitute will be seated next to you. At the designated time, you will hand your hood to your advisor who will then place the hood over your head. As your name is called, you will proceed across the platform. In order to reserve your chair and that of your advisor, you must submit the Doctoral Candidate Participation Form to the Graduate College.

Master and Juris Doctor Candidates

Master Degree Candidates and Juris Doctor Candidates will enter the arena through the lower east ramp 30 minutes prior to the ceremony and will participate in the processional. Candidates will wear proper academic regalia including your hood. At the appropriate time all candidates will stand and the appropriate degree will be conferred. The doors to the Wells Fargo Arena open one hour prior to the ceremony. Student seats located in the lower bowl of the arena, not filled fifteen minutes prior to the ceremony will be released to the general public. Late arrivals will be seated in any remaining available student seats at an appropriate time during the ceremony.
