Afghanistan for Kids - site developed by ASU Professor of English and Director of the English Education Department Alleen Pace Nilsen and ASU Linguistics Professor Don L.F. Nilsen because of the current interest in Afghanistan - particularly President Bush's request that American children lend aid to Afghan children. They put the website together to be used by parents, teachers, and children. They lived with their three children in Kabul between 1967 and 1969, and have kept up an interest in a part of the world that, even then, they both loved and feared.

American Association of School Administrators (AASA) - the professional organization for over 16,500 educational leaders across North America. Its primary responsibilities include improving the condition of children and youth, preparing schools and school systems for the 21st century, connecting schools and communities, and enhancing the quality and effectiveness of school leaders.

American Educational Research Association (AERA) - is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inqDecember 8, 2005d practical application of research results.

American Federation of Teachers (AFT) - AFT is an 900,000-member union of public and professional employees, including public and private school teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel (PSRPs), higher education faculty and professionals, employees of state and local governments, nurses and health professionals.

Antislavery Literature Project - The goal of the Antislavery Literature Project is to increase public access to a body of literature crucial to understanding African American experience, US and hemispheric histories of slavery, and early human rights philosophies.

Arizona Department of Education Academic Standards and Accountability Site - the official site for the program that provides for the collection and reporting of statewide student achievement data through administration of both a nationally standardized, norm-referenced achievement test and a test of the Arizona Academic Standards, developed in conjunction with Arizona educators. Information on student achievement and other measures of school accountability are collected, analyzed and disseminated to educators, policy makers and the public through the annual publication of the School Report Cards and various other information products.

Arizona Marcopolo - The Marcopolo program provides standards-based Internet content for the K-12 teacher and classroom, developed by the nation's content experts at no cost to you. Online resources include panel-reviewed links to top sites in many disciplines, professionally developed lesson plans, classroom activities, materials to help with daily classroom planning, and powerful search engines. "Arizona Marcopolo" is technology based learning and research at Arizona State University which provides professional development to trainers and teachers across the state to help them use Marcopolo-Internet Content for the Classroom. The Marcopolo Professional Development Program has been in place since December 1999. A new project will result in the alignment of all Marcopolo lesson plans to Arizona State Content Standards.

ARTS: Arts Resources for Teachers & Students - sponsored by the ASU Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts, here is a website with links to arts education resources for teachers and students.

ArtsEdge - site sponsored by the Kennedy Center contains lesson plans, news, and professional resources for teachers.

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) - an international, nonprofit, nonpartisan education association committed to the mission of forging covenants in teaching and learning for the success of all learners. Founded in 1943, ASCD provides professional development in curriculum and supervision; encourages research, evaluation, and theory development; and disseminates information on education issues ranging from inclusion to parent involvement, learning styles to school leadership.

The Chronicle of Higher Education - Beginning every Tuesday at 12 noon, Eastern time, readers can call up a guide to the contents of that week's issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. Plus they get all of the "Positions Available" job advertisements from that week's issue. A calendar of events and a list of important deadlines serve as useful reminders. A separate list spotlights events in Congress.

The College Board - an association of schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations in the U.S. and abroad. The organization facilitates access to higher education and promotes high academic standards through programs and services in college admissions, guidance, financial aid, assessment, and teaching and learning. It also conducts professional development programs, forums and conferences, policy analysis, and public outreach. As an authority on access to higher education, the College Board is a leading source of information on trends and innovations affecting students, parents, schools, and colleges.

Council of the Great City Schools - brings together some of the largest urban public school systems in the country in a coalition dedicated to the improvement of education in the inner cities. By keeping Congress, the media and the public informed about the problems facing urban schools and the critical need to ensure that today's students receive an education based on high standards and expectations, the Council helps to set the course for the survival of our cities, the productivity of our citizens, and the future of our nation.

Council for Basic Education (CBE) - a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the advocacy of high academic standards for all students in our nation's public schools. Founded in 1956, CBE has earned a reputation as an impartial critic of education reform and as a leading proponent of rigorous standards for all students in the core subjects. CBE directs its programs and publications to strengthen teaching and learning of the liberal arts to prepare students for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.

Education Week on the Web - online education newspaper with educational information by state.

Education Resource Organizations Directory (EROD) - from the US Department of Education, it contains information on more than 2,700 national, regional, and state education organizations including many associations that provide information and assistance on a broad range of education-related topics.

Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE): Language Arts Section - more than 30 Federal agencies formed a working group in 1997 to make hundreds of Federally supported teaching and learning resources easier to find. The result of that work is the FREE web site.

Institute of Education Sciences (IES) - a new organization, its mission is to advance the field of education research, making it more rigorous in support of evidence-based education. The Institute consists of the National Center for Education Research, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance. The organizational structure of the Institute will be taking shape over the next several months.

International Reading Association (IRA) - seeks to promote high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction through studying the reading processes and teaching techniques; serving as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of reading research through conferences, journals, and other publications; and actively encouraging the lifetime reading habit.

Marcopolo - The MarcoPolo State Network includes 50 states and the District of Columbia, dedicated to providing teachers with relevant Internet content aligned to state standards and necessary professional development to help them integrate the content into their teaching. The MarcoPolo Education Foundation works with state education organizations to support these goals through various programs.

Modern Language Association (MLA) - Founded in 1883, the MLA of America provides opportunities for its members to share their scholarly findings and teaching experiences with colleagues and to discuss trends in the academy. MLA members host an annual convention and other meetings, work with related organizations, and sustain one of the finest publishing programs in the humanities. For over a hundred years, members have worked to strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature.

National Book Festival - Official site of this annual Washington D.C. event. The festival is sponsored by the Library of Congress and in the past has been hosted by Laura Bush. Site includes cybercasts of author presentations from the 2002 festival.

National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) - world's largest subject-matter educational association, is devoted to improving the teaching of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the teaching of English.

National Education Association (NEA) - web site offers parents and teachers, citizens and students -- everyone interested in creating great schools -- a handy starting point for Web exploration.

National Parent Teachers Association (PTA) - celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 1996, this web site for the NPTA helps them promote their mission of: to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation.

National School Boards Association (NSBA) - the nationwide advocacy and outreach organization for public school governance. NSBA's mission is to foster equity and excellence in public elementary and secondary education in the United States through school board leadership. They achieve this mission through a united effort with state school boards associations who are our Federation Members.

National Writing Project (NWP) - its mission is to improve the teaching of writing and improve learning in the nation's schools through its extensive network of teachers.

Peace Portal: 2003 Peace Teachers Gathering - site hosted by Arizona's Chandler-Gilbert Community college and sponsored by GPAWP. Teaching ideas will be shared at annual "Peace Teachers Gathering" and submitted to website for further sharing.

Poetry Zone - this link contains renowned author and poet Nikki Grimes' suggestions for teachers, including student writing prompts, recommended lists of poetry for grades K-12 (one for elementary schools, and a second list of YA titles), and ideas for presenting poetry to students. The list changes from time to time.

Read, Write, Think - sponsored by the International Reading Association (IRA), National Council of teachers of English (NCTE), and Marcopolo, this site provides resources for educators and students in reading and language arts instruction.

Teachers.Net Gazette - online teachers' resource periodical.

Teacher Help-Line - at the University of Northern Iowa, help for teachers looking for the best way to integrate and assess technology use in their classroom curriculum.

Two-Year College English Association-West Region (TYCA-West) - spread throughout Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, Southern Idaho, and Western Wyoming, they are a small, collegial group helping promote professional visibility and leadership of two-year college faculty on a national level. The organization also promotes professional development opportunities for two-year college faculty.

Web66: A K-12 WWW Project - The developers of this project see the World Wide Web as a catalyst that will integrate the Internet into K-12 school curriculums. The University of Minnesota is beginning project Web66 to facilitate the introduction of this technology into K-12 schools. The goals of this project are: 1. To help K-12 educators learn how to set up their own Internet servers. 2. To link K-12 WWW servers and the educators and students at those schools. 3. To help K-12 educators find and use K-12 appropriate resources on the WWW.
