Presentation Description:
Purpose of Lesson: To spark students' interest in writing poetry. This is a good lesson for modeling word choice of the Six Traits of writing.

Class Activities: This is a great lesson to introduce writing poetry because students are comfortable with writing acrostics and the culminating fortune activity shows how easy it is to write meaningful poetry. The first thing students do is write an acrostic poem using one word per letter and then moving onto writing multiple word acrostics, and finally writing multiple word acrostics from from a fortune cookie fortune; first in groups and then on their own. The final individual fortune cookie acrostics are then "published" out on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk.
