Presentation Description:
"Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Because of the encouraging nature of this lesson, it can be adapted for use in any classroom, with students of any age. I made it work for me after the terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Objective:
Students will learn to express their feelings regarding any event through poetry, thereby increasing their own appreciation for poetry as well as using the written word to learn about and gain a further understanding of themselves as individuals.

Lesson Plan:
(This is a several week plan, used intermittently.)
1. Working independently, students brainstorm everything they can about the class topic, thereby bringing to mind appropriate language, images, and feelings.
2. Using shared expressions created during the brainstorming session, students create a unique, very personal pieces of poetry.
3. To develop a sense of ownership, students work together to decide the title and create the cover of the book of poems that is published as a result of this activity.
