Presentation Description:
Students share their own thoughts about what a friend is. Then the teacher reads the book Friends, written and illustrated by Helme Heine, to the class. Pause throughout the story to ask questions about the friends. Tell the students after the story they are going to draw a picture of himself/herself and a new friend. Then they will use emergent writing to write a sentence about why this is a new friend. Prior to the lesson have everyone's name on a slip of paper so the students can pick a name for a new friend. As students pick a name tell him or her who their friend is and give them a blank Xerox paper. Tell the student, "When we are finished, we will make a class book using your new friend drawings and writing." Gather students on the floor and show them each page of the book. Place the book in the Library Center for the students to view throughout the year.
