Important News The Arizona Department of Administration received approval to grant state employees in non-married domestic relationships benefits comparable to those enjoyed by married colleagues. Under a rule clarification approved on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 state employees are now able to add their same- or opposite-gender partner and their children to their health insurance benefit plan. When implemented October 1st, the new policy will apply to all state employees, retirees and those who work at Arizona’s three public universities.

Message from FWA President Mary Margaret Fonow |
|
I am pleased to serve this year as president of the Faculty Women's Association (FWA) and announce upcoming events for the spring semester of 2008. Please check the upcoming events section of this site for details. The nominations deadline (FWA Awards Guidelines) for our Annual Awards program is Monday, March 17, 2008. Each year, FWA sponsors faculty development workshops and networking programs designed to advance the efforts of women in the academy. I am pleased to announce that this year, FWA will begin offering workshops and networking receptions at each of our campuses. Electronic announcements will be sent out prior to each event. The ongoing discussions on the under representation of women in tenured faculty ranks and administrative positions in higher education continues to reminds us of the need for a strong faculty women's organization to work for institutional change in the academe. The ASU Faculty Women's Association has been an active advocate for increasing the status and participation of women on campus since 1954. In this time of growth and transition at our university, your participation is needed to ensure FWA is an effective force on behalf of gender and diversity concerns. Through our membership we can continue to offer workshops for all faculty ranks, provide support for all our colleagues, and work to provide a congenial atmosphere for incoming faculty at all levels. In addition to working for changes in policies, practices, and attitudes on campus, FWA provides career development information, networking opportunities, recognition, and celebration of achievements of women faculty and graduate students. None of this would be possible without the membership of ASU faculty.
If you are a member FWA, the time to continue your support and renew your membership is now. If you are not already a member, now is the time to join. Your $25 membership fee supports the FWA Annual Graduate Student Awards and stipends that recognize and celebrate women's achievements. Our association is independent, without financial support from the university for the numerous offerings provided. Your membership contributions, and donations, cover the costs associated with holding events such as faculty development and promotion and tenure workshops, networking receptions (including those to welcome and orient new faculty). Please join us in our efforts to ensure that ASU's model for the new American university is characterized by excellence and inclusiveness. Complete the FWA Membership Form (MS Word) [PDF] and return it, with your check, to FWA at Mail Code 4902. With regards and best wishes, Mary Margaret Fonow , Ph.D. FWA President, 2007-08 Professor and Director Women and Gender Studies Program |
