Alumni Achievement Award
One of the most prestigious awards given by the Alumni Association,
this award recognizes an alumnus or alumna who has excelled in
his or her profession and has contributed to Arizona State University
and/or the ASU Alumni Association, and their community. It was
established in 1964, and presented annually since 1972.
In honor of the Alumni Achievement Award,
a $2,000 book scholarship will be awarded to a current ASU student.
Funds for the book scholarship
are raised through donations received from members of the Founders’ Society.
Staff Achievement Award
This award is presented to an ASU staff member at the classified,
service professional, administrative, or academic professional
level who has made outstanding contributions to ASU and has significantly
enhanced the well-being and reputation of the university within
the community at large. The awardee will receive a $2,000 grant
for his or her achievement, a sum raised through donations from
members of the Founders’ Society.
Faculty Achievement Awards
Faculty excellence is the heart of an outstanding university. In
1964, the ASU Alumni Association established two awards: the Distinguished
Teacher Award for exceptional performance in the classroom, and
the Faculty Achievement Award for contributions through research.
Faculty achievement, however is never solely the province of one
category – great teachers also perform research and
provide valuable service.
In 1993, recognizing that great universities
are judged by their strength in service as well as teaching and
research, the Alumni
Association renamed the award categories and added a third award
to recognize the scope of faculty contributions. Today, faculty achievement
is recognized for contributions in teaching, research and service.
Award winners will receive a $2,000 grant for their achievements.
Funds for the awards are raised through the donations received from
members of the Founders’ Society.
James W. Creasman Award of Excellence
In 1983, the ASU Alumni Association's Award of Excellence was renamed
the James W. Creasman Award of Excellence in honor of the many
significant and extraordinary contributions Creasman made to Arizona
State University. It is a highly distinguished award that is presented
in selected years to an individual whose contributions to the Alumni
Association, the university, and the community illustrate those
qualities exemplified by James W. Creasman.
James William Creasman's commitment to Arizona State University
lasted for more than six decades. Creasman graduated from ASU in
1935 with a B.A. in education. He was a Gilbert schoolteacher, a
radio announcer for KTAR in Phoenix, a soldier with the Rainbow Division
in Europe and an executive producer for the Voice of America.
In 1947, President Grady Gammage asked Creasman to serve as the
first alumni secretary. He started the quarterly alumni publication,
now titled ASU Magazine.
He is most notably recognized for his role
in establishing the Arizona State College at Tempe as a university
and for his efforts to promote
the ballot initiative that officially changed the institution’s
name to Arizona State University. In addition to Creasman’s
other accomplishments, many ASU alumni also remember him as the voice
of the Sun Devil Marching Band, as he announced both the pre-game
and halftime shows at the Sun Devil Stadium.
