Malcolm GladwellASU College of Extended Education and Changing Hands Bookstore to Host Bestselling Author Malcolm Gladwell

Author to Visit Arizona on New Book Tour

The ASU College of Extended Education at the Downtown Center and Changing Hands Bookstore will host critically acclaimed, bestselling author, Malcolm Gladwell (The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, 2000).

Gladwell is kicking off a 25-state book tour in January to promote his newest work Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking and will make a valley appearance on Monday, Jan. 24He will speak and sign books at noon at the Downtown Center at ASU located at 502 E. Monroe St. in downtown Phoenix and at 7:00 p.m. at Changing Hands Bookstore located at 6428 S. McClintock Drive in Tempe, Ariz.  Books will be available for purchase at both locations.

Recognized for making complicated psychological theories easy to understand, Gladwell’s new book tackles rapid cognition: in his words, the kind of thinking that happens in a blink of an eye. Gladwell’s thesis contends when you meet someone for the first time, or walk into a house you are thinking of buying, or read the first few sentences of a book, your mind takes about two seconds to jump to a series of conclusions. In the book, he shows how this decision made in a “blink” generally is correct.

Inspiration for the book came when he was left pondering the power of first impressions after a run-in with police.  After growing his hair long, he was mistaken for a rapist and questioned for 20 minutes.  He decided to study this instant cognition and determine why and when it worked or failed and its implications for business and social situations.

Since 1996, Gladwell has been a staff writer for The New Yorker and prior to that a reporter for The Washington Post.  To view his biography or excerpts from his new book, due in bookstores Jan. 11, visit www.gladwell.com.
