ASU athletes make most of 2004

ASU’s student athletes had an outstanding year in 2004. Here is a quick look at some of the highlights, sorted by sport.

Baseball:

  • Finished the 2004 season 41-18 and earned national No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament.
  • Dustin Pedroia earned his third straight first-team all-Pac-10 selection.
  • Travis Buck earned a spot on the USA Baseball National Team and won gold medal at FISU World University Games in Tainan, Taiwan.

Cross Country:

  • Women’s team finished ninth at the NCAA championship and runner-up at both the regional and Pac-10 championships.
  • Amy Hastings became first Sun Devil to win a conference title. She was also a regional runner-up and All-American and chosen as the Pac-10 Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
  • The men’s team finished with school record finishes at the Pac-10 (2nd), Regional (2nd) and NCAA championships (8th). All three finishes had school records for low points in a meet.
  • Aaron Aguayo was third at the Pac-10 meet and was an All-American at the NCAA meet.

Diving:

  • Joona Puhakka won the NCAA 3-meter springboard competition. He became the first two-time diving champion in the history of ASU.

Football:

  • Sun Devils finished 8-3, tied for third place in the Pac-10 conference. The team will play in the Vitalis Sun Bowl against Purdue Dec. 31 in El Paso.
  • Seven Sun Devils were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic teams, led by first-teamers Jason Burke and Grayling Love. Burke, a sophomore long snapper, carries a 3.89 GPA in economics, while Love, a junior offensive lineman, holds a 3.48 GPA in finance.
  • Burke, Love and sophomore placekicker Jesse Ainsworth were named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII first team, marking the first time ASU has had more than two student-athletes named to that squad. Ainsworth is undeclared on his major and holds a 3.62 cumulative GPA, while Love is a second-time all-district honoree after he was a second-team academic all-district selection last season. ASU led the Pac-10 with the most student-athletes represented and was one of three schools in the district with three members on the 24-member list.
  • Senior quarterback Andrew Walter became the ASU and Pac-10 career touchdown pass leader and finished his career with 85, surpassing the 77 that John Elway threw in his Stanford career (1979-82). Walter also became just the sixth quarterback in Pac-10 history to throw for 10,000 yards and finishes fifth on the league's career list with 10,617 yards.
  • Thirteen Sun Devils earned 2004 All-Pac-10 Conference honors, including freshman tight end Zach Miller who was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Junior offensive lineman Grayling Love and senior safety Riccardo Stewart were first-team All-Pac-10 selections, while four Sun Devils were second-team honorees and six student-athletes earned honorable-mention accolades.
  • Miller and redshirt freshman Chris MacDonald were named first-team Freshman All-Americans by the Sporting News and Rivals.com.
  • Retired the jersey of former Sun Devil linebacker Pat Tillman. Tillman, a Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and former professional with the Arizona Cardinals, was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in April.

Volleyball:

  • Sydney Donahue and Colette Meek named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team.
