Academics, enrollment soar at ASU

ASU continued to draw some of the top students in the nation in 2004.

The university vaulted to third in the nation among all public universities for the number of freshman National Merit Scholars enrolled in the 2003 – 04 year, and seventh overall. The fall 2004 freshman class included 162 National Merit Scholars. Overall, there are 482 enrolled.

In other academic news:

  • Three ASU students received prestigious Goldwater Scholarships, the nation’s highest undergraduate award in science, mathematics and engineering.
  • ASU had nine student Fulbright winners and 12 National Security Education program awards to study abroad, more than any other university in the country.
  • Two ASU students were among 80 students chosen to receive the 2004 Udall Scholarship to pursue careers in environmental studies or tribal policy.
  • ASU Barrett Honors College senior Scott MacIntyre was the recipient of a Marshall Scholarship. Scholars receive full funding for two years at the graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.
  • Fifteen ASU doctoral students won the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Scholarship.
  • ASU enrolled its largest freshman class ever, with a record 7,719 first-time freshmen, sending overall enrollment to an all-time high of 58,156.
  • ASU was named as one of the “Top 25 Colleges for Latinos” in the March issue of  Hispanic Magazine.
