It's not often you can put Harvard and Arizona State University in the same sentence. But today you can.ASU will announce a program today that will bring free tuition to its neediest students.

Called "ASU Advantage," ASU will cover tuition, fees, books, room and board for eight consecutive semesters for students whose families show $18,850 or less on their federal financial aid forms. The program would begin in fall 2005.

Harvard University recently announced that it would waive tuition and fees for students whose families made less than $40,000 a year. ASU officials believe their program is the first in the West.

If the program went into effect today, about 200 students on campus now would be eligible, ASU administrators said, and they're expecting about 300 students for the 2005-06 school year.

The program will not be capped and will use a variety of existing grants, the Federal Work Study program, gifts and scholarships to provide for the students.
