About BSS
Mission
The Barrett Summer Scholars (BSS) program provides an opportunity for Arizona middle school age gifted students to experience a rigorous academic curriculum while learning about academic programs and services available at Arizona State University.
A Unique Academic Experience
Barrett Summer Scholars
begins with
a residential experience for Arizona 's most gifted students. Students will enroll in rigorous Summer Scholars courses, live on campus, and engage in academic-related activities including lectures and field trips.
Continued Connections
Barrett Summer Scholars maintains connections with participants beyond the initial summer experience. Activities include a Shadow My RA event that allows former participants to join their former resident advisors from the program in class and around campus, an invitation to ASU Homecoming festivities, and an invitation to the Flinn Foundation Centennial Lecture hosted by Barrett, the Honors College which have included a personal reception and presentation by speakers Jules Feiffer and Anna Quindlen.
Feedback from past BSS participants
Many participants commented on their experience in BSS:
• I liked how we learned about several things like the human circulatory system in the Biology class.
• In the Digital Animation class I learned how to make amazing movies using Maya, Photoshop and Premiere.
• The Dissecting the iPod class taught me how to program and build a circuit, build an amplifier and create games. Also, I liked that they exposed me to many disciplines of engineering.
• The Calculus class was challenging and we got to go places and see how math was used.
• We had intelligent and in depth discussions during The Human Event course.
• The Human Event teachers let the students speak their minds.
• Everyone should come to BSS. They will learn, have fun, make new friends and make lifelong memories.
Participants have been inspired by past program speakers which have included: Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Sally Ride, Arizona State Representatives, as well as Craig and Barbara Barrett.
