I am interested in the semantics and syntax of under-studied languages. For my dissertation at the University of British Columbia, I investigated the meaning of articles in Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), a Salish language spoken in British Columbia. Articles in Salish have very different meanings from those in English. In my postdoctoral position, at Memorial University of Newfoundland, I investigated the meaning of bare nouns (nouns that lack articles) in Inuktitut and Innu-aimun (Cree). I am most interested in the meaning of articles, and what they bring to the meaning of the noun phrase as a whole. In languages that lack articles (such as Inuktitut and Innu-aimun), I am interested in whether the bare nouns have the same meaning as the combination of article+noun in a language like English, or some other meaning.
