Comments on the benefits of the internship:

"I have encountered nothing so far that has been as challenging and difficult, and ultimately as rewarding and joyful, as teaching those refugee students and helping them.
-Xiaochun Wu

"The internship gave me the idea for my applied project and the experience has prepared me to face a paying teaching job. It also looks great on a resume."
-Beth Hepford

"I learned how to cope with situations which we sometimes could not predict from learning theories in class at ASU."
-Naomi Yamakawa

I have learned a lot about getting to know your students, and planning lessons around their specific needs. I have also learned how much work it can be to plan lessons, and then how frustrating it is to see them not understand the material. But I loved my students, and I think that working at Betania helped me to improve my teaching skills, and my ability to change things on the spur of the moment. I feel like I'm prepared for anything now."
-Anelalea Wenger

Comments on Team-Teaching:

"I had to let go of my idea of classroom activities and just observe my peers, whether I agreed with their activities or not; it was helpful not to feel solely responsible for the teaching. This was very helpful for me to become more relaxed about what I think is the 'ideal' lesson plan."
-Claudia Schroeppel

"Hui-Mei and I have very different teaching styles, so watching her teach and 'stealing' her ideas from her helped me grow as a teacher. I'd like to think I did the same for her!"
-Beth Hepford

"It was so nice to have someone else to run ideas by, to discuss things with, and to have as a back-up in the classroom. I don't think I could have made it without Naomi! She was wonderful, and it was interesting to observe her teaching style, and her materials and presentation."
-Anelalea Wenger

Coping with the Challenges:

"The biggest challenge for me was to try to fit in all that I wanted to teach the students in the little amount of time that we had. Since students would come and go, there were a few times in which we had to review lessons for those who did not show up, so that they would understand and know how to do the activities we were doing that same day."
-Ya Chu Yang

"I have learned to be flexible in planning lessons while being patient with students by giving them the time and freedom to learn at their own pace."
-Hui-Mei Lee

"When we were doing team teaching, it was easier to take care of those students who were a bit behind or just new in class."
-Ya-Fen Lin

Working in a Multi-Cultural Setting:

"I have discovered how to create a low-risk, low-anxiety learning environment for beginning ESL learners who are new to this country."
-Hui-Mei Lee

"Many of our ESL students celebrate Ramadan from roughly October 15 - November 15 each year, and will not eat anything during the day throughout this time period. I like to bring snacks in to class once in a while, but decided against bringing any food in to class, out of respect for students who celebrate this holiday."
-Anne Clark
