Graduate Studies Application Procedures

Submit the following items to Graduate Admissions

Submit the following items to the Admissions Office of Arizona State University Graduate College:

Graduate College Application for Admission APPLY ON-LINE

• $65.00 application fee ($80.00 for international students)

• An official transcript from degree granting institutions

• Test score reports (if required) (institution code is 4007)

• Domicile affidavit (for Arizona residents)

International students must have an official TOEFL score report sent to the Graduate College by ETS.

Submit the following items to the English Department

Department of English Application (form available in word format or pdf format).

Statement of Purpose (no more than two pages, summarizing past educational experiences and goals in pursuing a graduate degree).

Three Letters of Recommendation from faculty members familiar with your work (forms available on the internet in word format or pdf format).

Academic Writing Sample (if required by program). For example, one critical paper or research paper 10 - 25 pages prepared in an upper-division or graduate English course. This paper should show no markings or evaluative comments by a previous grader. The MFA program requires a manuscript if applying for fiction.

GRE Scores: GRE general test scores are requird for MA (literature), MA (rhetoric and composition), Ph.D. (literature and rhetoric/composition & linguistics). (The GRE subject test score is optional for the Ph.D. literature program). Transcripts: Send the English Department a photocopy of transcripts from all schools attended.

Application for admission with all supporting documents must be received in the Department of English by February 1. If the applicant wishes to be considered for financial aid, including teaching assistantship, for the following fall semester, the deadline is also February 1. (Note: no applicant will be allowed to begin an initial assistantship assignment in the Spring semester.) Those applying for a teaching assistantship, must also include a completed Graduate Assistantship application, an academic writing sample and a statement of teaching philosophy.
