Student teaching is the capstone experience for undergraduate students in English Education, as well as for post-bac students in a certification program. In order to student teach, students must have completed all of their requirements in English and must be approved by both English Education (Dr. Blasingame handles this) and by the College of Education Office of Professional Field Experience. This approval should be arranged in the semester prior to student teaching. The College of Education holds an informational meeting -- watch for the announcement -- early in the semester. Students receive 12 hours of SED credit. They will ordinarily be supervised by the English Education faculty, who will also arrange at least a couple of seminars during the semester and will assist student teachers in applying for employment. Because student teaching is a full-time commitment running from early morning until 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon, student teachers are encouraged to arrange their finances so that they do not need to have outside employment during the semester they are teaching. At both high school and middle school levels, we believe that our student teachers should work-up to teaching three or four class periods. We do not want them to take over the total responsibilities of their mentor teachers because they also have commitments to ASU. Also, we want them to have time to devise high quality lesson plans, which they can try out and revise based on their own reflections and on feedback from their students and their mentor teachers. Our goal is for student teachers to move on into full-time employment equipped not only with proven lesson plans, but also with the experience and confidence they will need to settle into whichever district employs them. For further information about student teaching, please visit the College of Education website, check out our English Education FAQ page, or email one of these English Education Professors: Student teachers can access teaching resources available to them by visiting the Links & Resources page on the website of the former Greater Phoenix Area Writing Project. |
