Students will work on a research writing project of their own, will prepare a conference presentation based on this project, and submit a proposal for an English Education conference. This course will run as a discussion and writing workshop and is meant to support students in their research and writing. ENG 480/507: Methods of Teaching Composition/ Special Problems and Issues in the Teaching of CompositionThis course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to teach writing at the middle and high school levels. Students will gain a repertoire of instructional and evaluative techniques for teaching the various modes of writing and for helping students to improve their written products. Students will practice various forms of writing instruction and assessment, guiding writers through a process model, creating a writers’ workshop, using writing portfolios, learning about writing across the curriculum, designing composition units and integrating writing instruction with other language arts and other disciplines. Students will participate in various writing activities themselves. ENG 494/598: Teaching the Novel Grades 6-12 Link to Course Flyer: Teaching the Novel Language Arts teachers want all of their students to love literature and become immersed in the novels they assign. This course is designed as an exploration of activities and philosophies for building a strong Readers’ Workshop in the secondary language arts classroom. Through identifying proficient readers, conducting thoughtful conversations about students and reading, and using a variety of ways to invite readers into books, we will design and experience reading workshops based on innovative and effective teaching strategies. Students will learn how to create and implement novel units, literature circles, books of choice, literary tea parties, and final gallery projects.
