Opening the prison door: Liberating curriculum in an undemocratic space, Beverly Moore, Sharon K. McDonough, Auburn University; Patricia A.Whang, California State University Monterey Bay
Journey with us into the locked, guarded, and monitored confines of a youth correctional facility.  We will bypass regimented classrooms that further imprison with a curriculum driven by dittos.  Our destination is a space where adjudicated youth are invited to write their lives, fears, and passions under the auspices of an anti-violence creative writing program.  Such a curriculum can liberate us all.

Deconstructing Heterosexism and Homophobia in Schools: Case Study of a Hate Crime by an Adolescent Offender.  I am constructing a case study
of Jon Buice, one of the assailants in the anti-gay murder of Paul Broussard
in Houston, Texas, in 1991.  According to my literature review, it will be
the first such case study.  There have been a few published interviews of
antigay assailants, including those of Karen Franklin, Ph.D., of the
California School of Professional Psychology (Berkeley), and those in the
documentary film, "Licensed to Kill" , by Arthur Dong.  My paper, however,
as far as anyone in the field can tell me, will be the first full case
study.

Turn the Wheel: Enlightened School Counseling for Adolescent Males
This paper formulates an overarching, inclusive model of counseling that enables school counselors to help adolescent males challenge the norm of hegemonic masculinity.  It draws from three areas, transpersonal psychology, holistic education, and mindful social action.  The aim is to move the students’ level of self-development and identity toward higher and more integrative realms.

Democratic curriculum workers in progress: Inquiry in teacher preparation.
The purpose of the scholarly panel discussion is to present, and further explore, examples of teacher inquiry that illustrate how interns, classroom teachers, and teacher educators may be described as ‘curriculum workers’ in the context of Professional Development School work. These examples demonstrate our commitment to implementing teacher inquiry as a tool to generate questions about existing curriculum, and explore democratic pedagogical practices that raise children’s voices within our classrooms.
