  Advisor/Advisee Responsibilities

What you bring to an advising session, to a large extent, will influence your success in completing your degree requirement, in a timely manner. Therefore it is important that you know the role of advisors in higher education, particularly at ASU (see below for the distinction between an advisor and a counselor):

  • DUAS advisors - because of the population we serve, our advisors are required to know much about the graduation requirements for the various degree programs offered at ASU. The goal of advising is to offer recommendations and strategies for enhancing your chances for success. We also serve as a resource for interpreting university policies and procedures.
  • Many majors have DEPARTMENTAL advisors who are responsible for working with students in specific majors. The number of students per advisor for a specific major varies and will dictate when or if walk-in advisement is available. Students should be patient during peak periods, such as pre-registration and at the beginning of each semester.
  • FACULTY advisors have a different role. For the most part they serve as mentors charged with guiding students through the curriculum of the student's selected major.

Advisors and Counselors play different roles at ASU.  Use the following table to help understand this distinction, and to help you understand the responsibilities of each group:

See an Advisor for help with the following questions:
  • Which classes are recommended based on my placement test results?
  • Could someone look at my transcript and see if I’m selecting the right courses?
  • How many classes should I take if I work part time?
  • Which courses that I have taken at another school are transferable to ASU?
See a Counselor for help with the following questions:
  • Are there tests I can take that will  help me select a major or a career?
  • Is there a way for me to manage my home and school obligations more efficiently?
  • How can I prevent getting so stressed out before taking tests?
  • What should I do? I am having problems with my roommate that interfere with my studies.
  • What’ll I do? I can’t concentrate and I can’t seem to sleep at night. Is the booze (and/or pills) getting to me?
  • What should I do? Nothing seems to go right and no one really cares.

Advisor Responsibilities
  • To encourage your self-direction and understanding of personal responsibilities as a student.
  • To assist you with making educational plans that are consistent with your goals, abilities, and interests.
  • To help clarify university, college and major requirements, policies and procedures.
  • To provide assistance in helping you solve problems related to requirements, policies and procedures.
  • To refer you to appropriate sources of information and assistance.
  • To evaluate transcripts to show how credits apply toward degree requirements.
  • To assist in exploring alternatives.
  • To be available for advising at regularly scheduled times.
  • To assist you in determining a realistic course load.
  • To assist you in selecting courses and combinations of courses that best meets your individual and academic goals and requirements.

Student Responsibilities
  • To develop plans for achieving your academic, career, and personal goals.
  • To learn the requirements for your degree. Read the relevant portions of the ASU Catalog and the advising guide for your major.
  • To become familiar with the University and College policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • To be prepared when you seek advisement:
    • have questions ready - know why you are there
    • bring your check sheet if you have a declared major
    • bring pencil and paper and any other relevant materials
  • To meet with your advisor regularly.
  • To become familiar with and utilize the full range of campus resources.
  • To satisfy all the requirements for your degree.
  • To keep an updated curriculum check sheet or DARS report for your major.
  • To seek information and assistance from appropriate sources as needed.
  • To be aware that your financial aid may depend upon your academic progress.

It is the goal of the advisors in the DUAS Academic Advising Services office to provide each student with the support and information needed for you to reach your goal of a degree from Arizona State University. For this to occur it is important that all parties fully understand their respective responsibilities. We believe this list (though not all-inclusive) will be helpful and we encourage you to ask any and all questions you may have.
