Cultural:  ASU is a very diverse and mercurial institution. Coming from a high school where your student cohort shared similar ethnicity, socio-economic class, religion, and/or heritage can make it easy to forget about the panoply of diversities that exist in our world.  ASU can be overwhelming and you can be presented with a number of options regarding your cultural heritage. Sometimes, the tendency can be to embrace your culture to the exclusion of all others, while other times you may want to reject your upbringing and seek out new venues and avenues for cultural expression.  Falling somewhere in the middle of that continuum is also possible.

Similar struggles can occur with issues of sexual identity and orientation.  Just because the culture you experience every day is hidden from public view does not make the conflict any less real.

The culture of disabled students requires securing attendant care, dealing with health problems, and struggling to stay active and independent in school. Even getting to campus can be an ordeal, but once at ASU there are a number of disability services that can make education more accessible.

Any of these cultural manifestations are valid and can provide you with succor and stability. However, knowing what those options are and knowing who to talk to can be a valuable aid as you navigate your way through the sometimes muddy academic waters in an effort to gain clarity and insight.
