The primary factors that influence laboratory safety are the perceptions, expectations, beliefs and subsequent behaviors of people associated with laboratory activities.
The work of safety professionals benefits the health and safety of people, property and the environment.
Laboratory safety is a dynamic process, not a static condition. As such, it must be nurtured according to the wisdom that comes from sound knowledge, practical skill and dedicated will.
Fellowship and stewardship are effective tools in the management of risk associated with laboratory activities.
Strategy
The LST participates in the continuous dynamics of university laboratory safety by coordinating expertise, sharing information and offering assistance to the university community.
Methods
Identify safety needs and suggest appropriate ways to meet those needs.
Anticipate future safety needs and formulate methods to meet those needs.
Coordinate current resources toward enhanced effectiveness.
Implement approved management strategies at the university, college, unit and lab levels.
Promote communication between relevant sectors of the campus.
Encourage networking and sharing of resources among unit safety personnel.
Enhance knowledge, competence and credibility of unit safety personnel.
Help the university train laboratory personnel according to their specialized needs.
