Improvement InitiativesCampus Planning. Due to intense renovation and expansion of academic and research space on campus, almost one-third of the parking is projected to be eliminated over the next ten years. To address this issue and plan for the future, a new Campus Master Plan began in 2003 under the direction of the administration guided by President Crow. Proposed Research and Academic Buildings, Residential Life, and ICA plans are under analysis, as well as proposed student enrollment and alternate transportation modes. Charettes (roundtables) have been conducted with numerous department and college representatives in order to obtain community insights and guidance. Faculty, staff, student and neighboring communities all have the opportunity to provide initial input and feedback to shape the final Master Plan which has implications for parking and transportation at ASU. Although two new parking structures were completed during the Academic Year 2004-05, various surface parking locations were lost to redevelopment. The Master Plan proposes that due to the decreasing level of parking, a comprehensive transit plan is developed. Campus shuttle services are under review. The campus community expressed interest in increasing shuttle frequency and implementing shuttle service to the south side of campus. These services are being reviewed consistent with available funding sources. Since PTS is locally funded through the receipt of parking permit fees, visitors parking rates, and citation revenue, all parking and transit service initiatives are currently financed through these funding sources. Campus Safety. Many of our efforts maintain or enhance the overall safety of the campus. Lighting is a vital component of lot safety. ASU Parking and Transit Services, in conjunction with Facilities Management, have aggressively worked to maintain positive lighting levels in all parking lots and structures. Lighting surveys and upgrades are conducted annually to verify adequate lighting levels. Parking and Transit Services spends $50,000 annually replacing burnt out bulbs and ballasts. Alternative lighting sources are under review, (e.g. use of solar power) in order to reduce maintenance and energy costs. Motorist Assistance Program (MAP)/Safety Card. Safety is important to ASU. As part of an integrated approach to increase safety awareness Parking and Transit Services developed and provided Motorist Assistance/Safety cards to our customers and all residence hall students on an annual basis. Parking Lot Maintenance. Each summer, PTS has various surface locations re-paved or seal coated to provide a safer parking environment. This maintenance also includes filling “pot holes”, repairing damage to curbs, re-striping stall lines, painting curbs and designated stalls such as green curbs/service vehicle stalls and loading zones. Power Park. Over the years, customers have requested the ability to purchase decals and conduct on-line business over the web. PTS has responded to those requests. With the assistance of various on-campus departments, PTS has implemented a new parking management database, PowerPark, that will process these types of services. PowerPark will allow customers to manage their parking account on-line. Customers can view their account, purchase a parking permit, appeal a citation, or pay citations on-line. Campus Shuttles. In addition to the existing Free Local Area Shuttle (FLASH) service, the USB Shuttle was added in spring 2003 with the opening of the new University Services Building on Spence/Rural Road. This route is expected to extend to the new ASU Foundation building opening on the north side of campus in spring 2005. To further enhance the FLASH service, in fall 2003 a new FLASH route was added to provide service along University Dr. from Lot 59 North. Beginning fall 2004, FLASH service (Flash Forward) will be extended from 8pm to 10pm, Monday through Thursdays.
