WHAT
are User Tables?
Data Warehouse users may now maintain their own lists
of student ID's or accounts on the Data Warehouse.
This allows users to have a Warehouse table that contains
the ID's of students that they are interested in or
have dealings with. This table can be joined to other
Warehouse tables to produce reports on just your students.
For
example the Orientation Office has students who use
their services each semester. They keep ID's of those
students in their user table and by joining it to
the Student Mailing Labels tables, they can produce
labels for just their students using Brio Query or
any other query tool that will access the Data Warehouse.
This method allows faster queries than if you create
a local Microsoft Access database table and join it
to the Warehouse.
WHO
can have a User Table?
Anyone who has access the ASU Data Warehouse may request
a User Table. The table is limited to two fields -
an ID field and a time period field (i.e.. semester).
HOW
do I get a User Table?
Send a note to WARE-Q describing the following:
-
Short description of purpose - what are you tracking?
why?
- Suggested
table name (i.e.. Orientation_IDs)
- Data
elements and types (i.e.. Affiliate ID - 9 characters,
Semester - 5 characters, or perhaps a date field).
At present we will set up only two fields.
- An
estimate of the maximum number of records.
- Warehouse
user ID/s of the person/persons with update capability.
- Warehouse
user ID/s of the person/persons with access to table.
- Software
you plan to update ID's with.
WHERE
will I see my User Table?
All User Tables are in a new database called USER_TABLE
so when you logon using Brio Query, you must add this
database to the others you want to log on to. For
example you might put STUDENT,COURSE,USER_TABLE in
the database box.
What
is the Down Side of User Tables?
Presently you can request only two fields in your
table - ID and a time period field. Beyond that, we
would need approval to develop an application on the
server.
Data
Administration is willing to upload an initial batch
of user ID's to your table but cannot maintain updates
to the table. Data Prism/Brio Query will not work
to update IDs. Presently, you must use Microsoft Access
or Microsoft Query to update your ID's on a PC platform.
The access for Macintosh computers has not been worked
out yet but should be possible with Microsoft Query
or Fox Pro.
