 ASU Recycles   MCj02508960000[1]

Updated list of what can be recycled in commingled and aluminum/plastic bins (blue 40 gal bins on wheels, blue 50/60 gal toters, and green 96 gal toters)

Since this is a new commingled recycling contract and Waste Management is tailoring the program to specifically meet ASU’s needs, there have been a few changes since the last email I sent out regarding what can be recycled - those changes are in bold. Recyclables listed in red italics can be placed in the commingled bins, blue (aluminum) and green (plastic) bins. Please do not put paper in the aluminum and plastic bins.

  • Newspapers
  • Brown paper bags
  • Chipboard:  cereal boxes, shoe boxes, etc.
  • Magazines and catalogs   -   No plastic wrappers
  • Copier paper wrappers
  • Phonebooks
  • Paperback books
  • Hardback books   -   Waste Management will currently accept these mixed into the paper bin, but that may change.
  • Office paper:  computer, white, color, Post-it notes, etc.  -   Please remove paper clips and rubber bands and reuse when possible.
  • Junk Mail
  • File Folders and brochures
  • Shredded paper   -   Please put in clear plastic bags and place next to the paper bins.
  • Aluminum cans with no food residue
  • Steel/tin cans
  • Aerosol cans  -   Must be emptied & non-hazardous.
  • Cartons:  orange juice, etc.
  • Aseptic containers:  drink boxes, etc.
  • Liquid- and waste-free plastic* with or without numbers 1-7 including water bottles, soda bottles of all different sizes, trays with no food residue (please rinse if there is any food waste on trays) and lids and bottle caps on drinking cups/bottles, etc. Bottle caps do NOT need to be removed and can remain on the bottle or be placed in the bin separately , but please make sure to drink or dump liquid in bathroom or kitchen sinks prior to recycling them. It is imperative that we keep liquids out of our bins.
*We can’t accept polystyrene/Styrofoam, plastic wrap or shrink wrap at this time. We are actively looking for vendors that can recycle them.

Buckets or larger plastic containers that are free of trash, liquid, and hazardous waste may be recycled as long as the metal handles are removed. If you need large quantities of buckets recycled, please call for a pick-up. If you have only one or two buckets or larger plastic containers, please place them next to a recycling bin (not in it).

Info needed for new glass recycling program

We are going to implement a more organized campus-wide glass recycling program, and hope to have it in place sometime during the fall semester. I need more detailed information from departments regarding how much and what types of glass they generate per week. If you generate a decent amount of glass in your area, please email me with the following details:

  • Colors of glass generated:  clear, green, brown, etc.
  • Locations of glass generated (Please be as specific as possible and include building, room #, etc.)
  • Contamination levels:  Are chemicals stored in the glass containers? If so, do you rinse them?
  • Amount:  Please send me an approximate weight generated each week. If glass is only used during certain times of the semester, about how many times and how much weight is generated per time?

Glass recycling locations in the Valley

If you would like to recycle glass in the meantime, please check out the locations listed below. This is a partial list, so please search for glass-recycling information on the Internet for your city/town. Some cities do not recycle glass at this time.

Cardboard

We are continuing to recycle cardboard on campus in the designated bins/areas. Please be sure to remove any recyclables or trash from inside cardboard boxes and flatten them. Thanks!

Cartridge Recycling (Hewlett Packard and Non-Hewlett Packard Cartridges)

Thanks to ASU Stores, recycling cartridges will be a lot easier! Instead of sending your cartridges back to Hewlett Packard by way of UPS or holding on to non-Hewlett Packard cartridges, Stores will now pick up ALL cartridges from your department. For a pick-up, please contact ASU Stores at 480-965-3772 or asustores@asu.edu. Again, a great big thank-you to Stores for doing such a wonderful job of recycling toner cartridges!

Battery Recycling

Call Risk Management (Hazardous Waste) at 480-965-0647 and ask for a pick-up.

Packaging Peanuts & Bubble Wrap

Small staff and limited time prevent us from collecting packaging peanuts and bubble wrap at this time. However, you can take packaging peanuts and bubble wrap that are in good condition (and in a clean, garbage-free bag or box) to:

  • The UPS Store
903 South Rural Rd. (near campus)
  • Most UPS Stores, Mail Boxes Etc. and shipping/business service centers. Please check with a particular store in advance.
